FE started as a tiny, Japan-only strategy game with permanent death for your named units. What’s astonishing is that the series did not go overseas until Fire Emblem (The Blazing Blade) in 2003.  In this brief article, I will discuss how many games there are, when they were released, the order to play them in, and which is the best. As we go deeper, I think we might just convince you to start playing today!

How Many Fire Emblem Games Are There? 

As we look at the mainline Fire Emblem games in order, there are 16 different games and a few spinoff series. To break it up for you, there have been 13 central games, 3 spin-offs, and 3 popular remakes. This equals a whopping 19 Fire Emblem games.

All Fire Emblem Games In Order Of Release

The stories of each game in the Fire Emblem series are all different, so there isn’t exactly a set order. Although you can play any of these games any way you choose, you can miss references to particular characters’ names because the storylines are linked.

1. Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon And The Blade Of Light (1990)

Released originally in Japan on April 20, 1990, the game was made available only on December 4, 2020, in the USA.  It was recently also remade as Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon (number 11) and added to the Fire Emblem games in order. Fun fact: Released on Famicom, this game is also available on a Virtual Console!

2. Fire Emblem Gaiden (1992)

The sequel made its Famicom debut in 1992, only in Japan. Gaiden kept the turn-based gameplay but added an overworld to discover. The plot of this Fire Emblem game, in order of release, centers on two rival forces in Valentia (another continent). 3. Fire Emblem: Mystery Of The Emblem (1994)

In 1994, Super Famicom’s third installment made its debut, although only in Japan. The story comes in two interesting parts, the first is a remake of the previous story, and the rest is the narrative continued. Gamers can travel the length of the campaign’s story-driven tasks across the continent. It was also remade as Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem (number 12) in 2010.   It is surely a favorite of many FE fans amongst the Fire Emblem games in order.

4. Fire Emblem: Genealogy Of The Holy War (1996)

This is the next installment in the Fire Emblem games in order, but it is also Japan-only. It made its debut on the Super Famicom in 1996. The gameplay is the same as before. However, additional characters are included. Every chapter of the narrative features two generations of characters. 5. BS Fire Emblem (1997)

Taking place before Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, this part is an official part of the Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light timeline. This is technically the fifth installment of the Fire Emblem games in order was first considered as a spin-off separate from the official mainline games before Nintendo incorporated it into them starting in 2010. 

6. Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 (1999)

Released on Super Famicom in 1999, this next Fire Emblem game was also released exclusively in Japan. Its narrative goes back in time a generation after the last volume. An army is assembled by the protagonist to overthrow the Empire and restore the Thracian kingdom. 7. Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade (2002)

In 2002, the sixth installment in the list of Fire Emblem games in order made its Game Boy Advance premiere. Due to its popularity, it was the last Fire Emblem game to have a Japan-only release.  The gameplay is delivered through multiple maps connected by narrative storylines. Each map has a boss, and completing them develops the plot and unlocks new levels of challenges. 

8. Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade (2003)

For the Game Boy Advance, The Blazing Blade joined the list of Fire Emblem games in order as the seventh game. Its tale of the fictional continent, Elibe, serves as a prelude to The Binding Blade, which is the installment preceding The Blazing Blade.  Lyn, Eliwood, and Hector, three young lords, unite on a journey to find Eliwood’s missing father, Elbert. While on this journey, they avert a larger scheme to endanger the stability of Elibe.

9. Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones (2004)

In Japan, The Sacred Stones had its Game Boy Advance debut in 2004. It made its North American and European debuts a year later. Introducing Magvel, another continent, establishes a new continuity for this next part of the Fire Emblem games in order.  The story follows Eirika and Ephraim, royal family members moving to end the conflict. 10. Fire Emblem: Path Of Radiance (2005)

In 2005, Path of Radiance made its Nintendo GameCube launch. Tellius, another fictional continent, is introduced in the narrative of the next Fire Emblem Game in Order. Two hostile countries are at war over control of Crimea. Your task is to return Princess Elincia to the castle in Crimea. The game includes three difficulty settings. However, permadeath can be found in each one. There are up to 46 characters, all belonging to the rooster you choose for each battle. Each kind of fighter uses a certain set of tools and abilities.

11. Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon (2008)

2009 saw the release of Shadow Dragon for the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS. It’s a remake of the first game in the Fire Emblem games in order, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light. The events described in the first game are expanded as newer parts are added!

12. Fire Emblem: New Mystery Of The Emblem (2010)

This game was created for the Nintendo DS and made its debut in 2010. It is a remake of The Mystery of the Emblem. The story has the same basic structure as the original Fire Emblem games in order, but in addition to Marth, a controllable avatar is also included. It also contains scenes from Satellaview’s BS Fire Emblem, adding a total of four extra episodes. The “Casual Mode” is an additional new feature. 13. Fire Emblem Awakening (2012)

Awakening had its Nintendo 3DS premiere in Japan in 2012 and 2013 (internationally). The tale, which takes place 2000 years after the events of the first game, features a rescue mission and army combat. The option to build relationships between characters to enhance their skills, adjusting the camera during combat, and the Casual mode are among the new features that spice up this next sequel in Fire Emblem games in order. 

14. Fire Emblem Fates (2015)

2015 saw the release of Fates on the Nintendo 3DS. There are three separate game versions: Birthright, Conquest, and Revelation. Each of these features the same character but a different plot. While introducing goals for every combat, the gameplay keeps its former freshness. That implies that destroying opponents in certain methods may result in receiving more currency or equipment. Later, Conquest included turn limits and other challenging elements in this fourteenth Fire Emblem game.

15. Fire Emblem Heroes (2017)

In 2017, we saw the release of the spin-off Heroes on iOS and Android for the first time. It’s a crossover title featuring characters from multiple Fire Emblem entries. In the category of “Best Mobile Game,” it took home multiple accolades. Additionally, it has the most revenue of the entire Fire Emblem games in order. Against other teams, players command four heroes. Different characters have various abilities, constraints on movement, and weaponry. 16. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows Of Valentia (2017)

For the Nintendo 3DS, Shadows of Valentia made its debut in 2017. It is the remake of Fire Emblem Gaiden. It is known in Japan as Fire Emblem Echoes. In the game, Alm and Celica use different strategies to put a stop to a battle. It retains Gaiden’s dungeon-crawling elements while integrating both new and old gameplay concepts. It’s one of the best Fire Emblem games in order not to be missed. 

17. Fire Emblem: Three Houses (2019)

In 2019, Three Houses made its Nintendo Switch debut. It is the final installment of Fire Emblem games in order.  Three Houses keeps familiar qualities while adding comprehensive character interplay and time management attributes.

18. Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes (2022)

Launched for Nintendo Switch in 2022, this spin-off is a crossover title starring characters from the Three Houses game. So although it doesn’t make the cut to the main Fire Emblem games in order, it’s worth it.  Fun fact: It includes Dynasty Warriors series gameplay as well!

19. Fire Emblem Engage (2023)

Its Nintendo Switch release is scheduled for January 20, 2023. Although we don’t know much about it yet, we know it’s part of the main Fire Emblem games in order.
